‘A Brief History of Time’, is a marvelous creation of one of the most knowledgeable and brilliant theoretical Physicist in the history of mankind, Stephen Hawking. 

There are times when a person inquires over the origin and existence of the Universe and this is what Stephen Hawking’s book will tell you – ‘Even if there is only one possible unified theory, it is just a set of rules and equations. What is it that breathes fire into the equations and makes a universe for them to describe? The usual approach of science of constructing a mathematical model cannot answer the questions of why there should be a universe for the model to describe. Why does the universe go to all the bother of existing?’


 There are a number of physical theories relating to the story of evolution and existence of this Universe like the famous Big-Bang theory. However, most of the physical theories are either hypothetical or provisional in nature because sometimes, results of certain experiments contradict the established theory.

In the modern-age, Scientists tried and described the Universe with the help of two basically partial theories; ‘Quantum Physics’ and ‘Theory of Relativity’. Both these theories are two extremes, the Relativity theory deals with macroscopic dimensions (those of the order of one followed by 24 zeros), whereas Quantum mechanics deals with microscopic dimensions (millionth of millionth of a centimeter).

It was in the year 1988, that Professor Stephen Hawking came up with a Unified Theory called the Quantum Theory of Gravity. Professor Stephen Hawking’s book, ‘A Brief History of Time’, published by ‘Bantam Books’ has been a best seller with over ten million copies sold in over 40 languages.

In order to completely describe the Universe that we live in, Stephen Hawking uses a very simple language, with fewer technical jargons, that is easily understood by a layman. Stephen Hawking has reasonably used Newton’s law and Maxwell’s equation, to explain space-time relativity, and Geodesic.

A Geodesic is referred to as the longest or the shortest path between any two given points. Stephen Hawking concludes that it is the mass of the Sun that actually curves the space-time. The heavenly bodies in a four-dimensional space-time, following a straight path, actually resemble as if moving in a three dimensional circular orbit, for example, ‘The Earth’.

In a similar fashion, Stephen Hawking explains the expanding Universe and the Uncertainty Principle to make them easily understandable. The upper threshold that Stephen Hawking specifies for the re-collapse of the ever-expanding Universe is somewhere near 10,000 million years. In order to support this statement, Stephen Hawking adds that it already has been 10,000 million years, since the process of Universal expansion ever began.

Stephen Hawking has raised an important point with regards to the Uncertainty Principle and Quantum Physics. He adds that there’s an immense possibility of the application of Quantum Mechanics in the area of Physical Science. Stephen Hawking strongly believes that large-scale structure of the Universe and Gravity are certain areas where Quantum Physics must have been properly incorporated.

Stephen Hawking has elaborated on the black-hole theory stating that even light cannot escape the enormous gravitational pull of a star or a heavenly body. According to this theory, any light emitted by a star would be strongly pulled back by its gravitational force before it could illuminate some other heavenly body and such an object is called a ‘Black Hole’.

There are certain questions which don’t have an absolute answer but come with a trivia and mystery associated with them. Some of the most fundamental questions that may strike anyone’s mind are “How does this Universe exist”, “Was there a beginning to the time?”, “Will there be an end?”, “Is the Universe Infinite?”

In order to find answers to such questions, Stephen Hawking reviewed the theories pertaining to the ‘cosmos’, relevant paradoxes, puzzles, and unresolved contradictions. It was then that he formed his own opinion and came up with a Unified theory known as the Quantum Theory of gravity, which may play an instrumental role in resolving most of the trivia and mysteries associated with the Physical Science.

Professor Stephen Hawking has dipped into the cosmic world, the black hole, distant galaxies, particles with spin and flavors, quarks, antimatter, GUTs etc. He has always intrigued his audience with the possible implications of these physical objects, and phenomenon. Professor Stephen Hawking is a physically challenged human being suffering with the Lower Motor Neuron Disease (LMD), known as ‘Lou Gehrig’s disease’.
