Talk about childhood and we expect kids to struggle with mathematical operations and historic personalities rather than knowing fashion brands in and out as well as walking the ramp for accessories endorsed by these brands. And the buck doesn’t stop here; sexualization amongst children seems to be a growing trend these days.
The influence of fashion industry on children has steadily increased in recent times.
There was a time when a kid was unaware of what fashion shows and style actually meant. But today the scenarios are completely different. Most of the young kids are dragged towards the world of fashion. The reason behind this is the over exposed media and overrated advertising of brands on televisions and web.
It seems unreal when you witness young girls walking the ramp, clad in makeup and dressed in swimwear and lingerie. This is exactly what a modeling contest in China was all about. This modeling contest featuring 10 year old girls modeling on the ramp like real catwalk models garnered heavy criticism from world media. Te contest with girls moving around in bikinis and masks similar to the real catwalk models was organized in a hotel in Jiangxi, China fumed up several controversies amongst the global media and triggered heated discussion among the people of China.
Many people questioned its integrity, accusing it for being a show to satisfy some people’s twisted and revolting obsession. It was a serious issue which made people extremely furious and accused the organizers for committing such filthy crime. This news burgeoned amidst yet another public outburst where provocative pictures of a 10 year old French model Thylane Lena-Rose Blondeau had already hit the scene. Both the incidences caused a stir amongst the people and forced the people of China to demand strict measures and restrictions on sexualization of kids in media and sexual content in advertising.
Another such controversial issue was found during the French runway week where young girls were found in advertising campaign for lingerie line targeting 4-12 year olds. The French fashion company was accused of sexualizing young girls and portraying disgusting fetish. The campaign was made by a French lingerie label which launched lingerie line of children's panties, bras and inner wear flooding their website with disgusting images of awfully dressed little girls modeling the controversial collection. Disturbing images of little girls dressed in striped bra and panty were found on the website.
Several fashion industry experts blasted the advertising campaign exposing young girls. The most disturbing thing about such campaign is that they’re targeting young kids who probably aren’t old enough to even know what lingerie line is. It’s disgusting to think of children in lingerie, but it’s even more disturbing to think of them modeling in it like it’s a casual occurrence.
